November 2019 – January 2021

Michael Lyons (1943-2019) was an alchemist, turning base materials into objects of beauty and wonder. An internationally renowned sculptor, he first gained recognition as a ‘Young Contemporary’ in the 1960s and came to be regarded as one of the finest steel sculptors of his generation. He was a founder member of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and his potent architectural forms always command attention in their relation to landscape. Through his teaching he contributed significantly to sculptural practice in the UK and in China and his drawings and sculpture are represented in public and private collections both in the UK and internationally.

Michael Lyons’ sculpture ranges from steel construction, to organic bronzes modelled on an intimate or monumental scale. Although predominantly abstract, it draws on aspects of human form, nature, cosmology, myth and ancient cultures.

This exhibition features steel and bronze sculptures plus related works on paper from various stages of Michael Lyons’ career. We are grateful to the Michael Lyons Estate for their support and for allowing us to extend this exhibition through 2020 because of the pandemic.
