ICE Artists Sept 2016 – Jan 2017)
Lesley Birch – Lesley is a fine artist whose artwork spans landscape and abstract genres. She works in a variety of media including printmaking, oil, acrylic and cold wax. She has exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, won the Artist Magazine Award 2016 and will be exhibiting at the Ing Discerning Eye, Mall Galleries, London in November 2016. Recently, Lesley has been exploring and experimenting with new techniques using cold wax medium and is a contributor to a new book about these techniques to be published in 2017.
Rebecca Carr – Rebecca is an artist-maker and social entrepreneur. She makes beautiful, contemporary unisex clothing inspired by Eastern traditions and is the founder of KIOSK project space and cantina in Fossgate, York. The aims of KIOSK chime with those of ICE: to constructively disrupt established modes of creative practice, both within the periphery of York and beyond.
Emilie Flower – Emilie is a documentary videographer whose training and work experience lie in qualitative research. She has undertaken projects in collaboration with the Centre for Applied Human Rights at the University of York, where she has made use of film and photography as an advocacy tool. She currently works as a freelance filmmaker and researcher. She joins ICE in November 2016.
Mark Hearld – Mark studied illustration at Glasgow College of Art and then completed an MA in Natural History Illustration at the Royal College of Art. Taking his inspiration from the flora and fauna of the British countryside, Mark works across a number of mediums, producing limited edition lithographic and linocut prints, unique paintings, collages and hand-painted ceramics.
John Hollington – John designs and makes home- and garden-ware inspired by the clean lines and geometrical forms of modernist art and architecture. All products are made using small batch production techniques, in close collaboration with local craftsmen and small to medium family-owned suppliers, to guarantee attention to detail and to support British manufacturing expertise. Products are assembled and hand finished in-house to ensure a high quality finish. Sustainable and natural materials have been chosen so that products will age well and will increase in personal value over their life cycle.
Tessa Layzelle – Tessa creates contemporary quilts and textiles; she also works in illustration and across disciplinary boundaries. T A L Modern Quilts is a research project, an exploration of painterly and illustrative technique to create a well-made, practical textile. The aim is that with usefulness and use, the work will disappear and become part of the fabric of the everyday.
Evie Leach – Evie is a jewellery designer and maker working in Sterling Silver with semi-precious gemstones and beads. She takes inspiration from the geometry found in both nature and architecture to create clean, angular designs. Evie studied Jewellery and Silversmithing at the Birmingham School of Jewellery where her basic knowledge, learned from her jeweller parents, was transformed into traditional skills.
Penny Phillips – Penny is a ceramicist who has transitioned from being a thrower on the wheel to a sculptor in clay. She draws on many influences, including a philosophy observed during a visit to Japan that can be summarised as: the only limits on what you can do with clay are your own. She creates wild animals in a style characterised by heavily textured, figurative animal forms using mixed clays and oxides. A residency in Hungary in 2016 has begun to push Penny’s practice in a new, evolving direction, which she will explore in her studio at ICE.
Emily Stubbs – Emily is a ceramic artist and designer. She experienced her first taste of clay during her Pre-BA Foundation Course at Batley School of Art and Design. Inspired by the medium she went on to study a BA Honours degree at the University of Wales, Cardiff, graduating in 2007.
